Sun, Sea and Accessibility: Three Beaches Near Lisbon Worth Discovering
Portugal is known for many things: over eight centuries of history, vibrant culture, delicious cuisine and, of course, its beautiful coastline.
Blessed with more than 300 days of sunshine per year, it is no surprise that the beach is an essential part of the Portuguese lifestyle and one of the country’s main attractions for visitors from around the world.
As someone who has spent many years helping travellers with accessibility needs explore Portugal, I am often asked the same question: which accessible beaches near Lisbon would you recommend?
Fortunately, there is no shortage of excellent options. Portugal has developed one of Europe’s most recognised beach accessibility programmes through the “Accessible Beach – Beach for All!” initiative.
The programme brings together national authorities and local municipalities to improve accessibility at coastal and inland bathing areas across the country.
Today, 244 maritime and river beaches are officially recognised for their accessibility features. Visitors can easily identify them through the Accessible Beach flag, a national recognition awarded to beaches that meet specific accessibility criteria. The programme has also created a positive dynamic among municipalities, encouraging continuous improvements and innovation in beach accessibility.
As a result, travellers with accessibility needs can enjoy a growing number of beaches that offer not only beautiful scenery, but also greater comfort, independence and peace of mind.
If you are planning a trip to Lisbon and would like to experience some of the best accessible beaches in the region, these three are definitely worth adding to your itinerary.
Carcavelos Beach – The Easiest Accessible Beach Escape from Lisbon

If you are staying in Lisbon and looking for a stress-free beach day, Carcavelos is probably the easiest and most convenient option.
Located less than 30 minutes from the city centre, Carcavelos is one of the most accessible beaches in the Lisbon region, particularly for travellers who rely on public transport.
The beach can be reached via the Lisbon-Cascais train line, and passengers with reduced mobility can request boarding assistance from the railway operator in advance to ensure a smooth journey.
For those travelling by car, several accessible parking spaces are available close to the beach. One of Carcavelos’ greatest strengths is its long, flat beachfront promenade. Lined with cafés, restaurants and accessible public facilities, it offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the seaside atmosphere at your own pace.
Even outside the summer season, it is a wonderful place for a stroll, a coffee break or simply to enjoy the Atlantic views.
During the bathing season, the beach provides amphibious beach wheelchairs and support from lifeguards and dedicated volunteers, helping visitors with reduced mobility enjoy direct access to the water.
With its combination of accessibility, location and vibrant atmosphere, Carcavelos is an excellent introduction to Portugal’s accessible coastline.

Praia da Conceição – Beach Time and the Charm of Cascais
If you are looking to combine a day at the beach with a taste of local Portuguese life, Praia da Conceição is hard to beat.
Located in the heart of Cascais, this beach offers the perfect combination of accessibility, convenience and atmosphere. Just a short distance from Cascais train station, it can easily be reached from Lisbon using the same coastal railway line that connects the capital to the seaside towns along the Atlantic coast.
One of the great advantages of Praia da Conceição is its location within Cascais’ historic centre. Much of the area is pedestrian-friendly and relatively flat, making it enjoyable for visitors who wish to explore beyond the beach itself.
The surrounding streets are filled with cafés, restaurants and small shops, creating a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.
And while you’re there, don’t miss the opportunity to stop at Santini. Founded in 1949 and still run by the same family, it is one of Portugal’s most iconic ice cream shops and a favourite among both locals and visitors.
Whether you spend your day by the sea, wandering through the town centre or enjoying an ice cream overlooking the Atlantic, Praia da Conceição offers a wonderful combination of beach, culture and local flavour.

Albarquel Beach – Accessible Nature at Its Best
Nestled between the city of Setúbal and the breathtaking Arrábida Natural Park, Albarquel Beach offers a very different experience from the beaches of Lisbon and Cascais. Here, accessibility meets nature in one of Portugal’s most beautiful coastal landscapes.
With the green hills of Arrábida as a backdrop and crystal-clear waters stretching out towards the Atlantic, Albarquel is an ideal choice for travellers seeking a quieter and more scenic beach experience. The beach has become a national reference for accessibility and inclusion.
In 2020, it was recognised as Portugal’s Best Accessible Beach, highlighting the municipality’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors.
Beyond its accessible pathways and facilities, Albarquel stands out for its inclusive approach.
Information panels and sensory interpretation elements help visitors, including people who are blind or have low vision, engage more deeply with the surrounding natural environment.
Whether you come for the stunning views, the peaceful atmosphere or the commitment to inclusion, Albarquel demonstrates that accessibility and natural beauty can go hand in hand.
Whether you are looking for a lively beach atmosphere, the elegance of Cascais or the stunning natural beauty of Arrábida, these three beaches prove that accessibility and unforgettable travel experiences can go hand in hand.
