Sabine about South Africa: a short interview

Tell us a little more about yourself?

I am Sabine, married to Alfie Smith of Epic Enabled. I was born in Switzerland but now call South Africa my home. I arrived in South Africa 6 month before Nelson Mandela was elected president in 1994, have lead many overland tours from Cape Town to Vic Falls via Namibia & Botswana, joined some accessible safaris to the Kruger & surrounding and now am running the Epic Guest House & Epic Enabled office in Cape Town.

What kind of accessible services does your company offer?

If you had to introduce South Africa, what would you say?

Experiencing African Wildlife in its natural habitat is incredible! In addition, South Africa offers dramatic coastline, stunning scenery, iconic landmarks like Kruger – Cape Town – Table Mountain – Cape of Good Hope just to mention a few, diverse cultures, friendly people and sunshine… where else can you find it all in one country?

South Africa’s modern cities are an incredible contrast to the “Wild Africa” where we experience the famous BIG 5 & many other species in their natural habitat, hear their calls and feel the African heartbeat.

How accessible is South Africa for visitors with a mobility impairment?

Our tourist attractions like Table Mountain, Cape of Good Hope, Kruger etc are fairly accessible with a number of accessible bungalows to choose from. Unfortunately, accessible public transport is non-existent and you need to have your accessible transport pre-planned. Pre-planning is everything! South African’s are very helpful and friendly and will always help you with a smile.

What are your Top 3 Accessible Must see/Must do in South Africa for disabled travelers?

1) Kruger National Park & private reserves: experience our precious African wildlife in its natural habitat is absolute exhilarating and an experience you will never forget.

2) Cape Town: Our iconic Cape Town has so much to offer… from Table Mountain, Robben Island, Waterfront & aquarium, markets, Stellenbosch Winelands, Boulders Beach Penguins, Kirstenbosch Botanica Gardens all the way down to the famous Cape of Good Hope.

Cape Town

3) Garden Route: famous for its dramatic coastline with tranquil beaches, relaxing forests and beautiful mountains. Quaint Hermanus, Ostrich farms in Oudtshoorn, boat trip on Knysna Lagoon, animal sanctuaries around Plettenberg Bay, rejuvenating Tsitsikamma Forest, windy city Port Elizabeth are just a few places to visit along the way.

Do you have any advice for travelers who are interested in visiting South Africa?

The Kruger area has Summer Thundershowers in Jan & Feb and it can be rather humid/hot during that time. However Cape Town is stunning during the same time as we always have a cool sea-breeze and it hardly gets too hot.

June / August are our winter months and it can be a bit chilly and possibly wet in Cape Town, whereas the Kruger area has incredible animal sightings and is warmer as they are in the dry season.
